Artist Bio

Argya Dhyaksa or Gya (born Jakarta 1991) is a graduate from Bandung Institute of Technology, Ceramic Craft major. He is interested in the beauty of ugliness and silliness, so that most of his ceramics works are in rough, ugly chaotically imperfect forms. This concept was inspired by the wabi-sabi influence where there is always a beauty behind the impermanent and imperfections. His recent solo exhibition As Delicious As My Forehead was held at the Ruang Dua Sembilan, Jakarta in 2019. His group exhibitions include the Jakarta Contemporary Ceramic Biennale Coefficient of Expansion at the National Gallery of Indonesia, Jakarta in 2014, and Art Central HK at the RedBase Foundation, Hong Kong in 2016. In his journey in the art industry, he was awarded the 2nd Runner-up of Trimatra Salihara Competition at Komunitas Salihara, Jakarta.

Mythical distancing

There is a lot of misleading news around the pandemic in Indonesia. We never knew who began the spread or what is the cure or how we really contain the virus, which allows conspiracy theories and mystical beliefs to take part in the discussion. If we neglect logic in dealing with these problems, the result is not handling the pandemic objectively.

Through this work, I use ceramic figures to symbolize the mystical properties and theories through which existence is yet to be justified. It is a way to picture gatherings with a distance to actually gather, symbolised by confining these figures in glass bottles
