Artist Bio

Anissa Dermawan Kunaefi, often called Deka Dermawan, was born in Bandung in 1994. Deka completed undergraduate education at the Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB), majoring in Visual Arts and Design and took a Fine Arts study program in light of pursuing her work in the painting studio.

Deka has a great interest in colour exploration. Her interest in photorealism has led her to observe a change of colour on an object as it is shone under the sunlight. The series of work that was produced by the experiment is titled ANNISA

Her visual attempts are often inspired by expressive colours. Her work is often inspired by still life artists such as Wayne Thiebaud who uses a lot of warm pastel colours creating an impressive and graceful canvas.

For her interest in colour classification, Deka began to study colours with very low saturation, colours fading on product packaging and banners, and the fading colour of an object in the street. Currently she works as an illustrator and animator  for daily content in a bag production company while developing ideas and studies for new artworks.

Tanda Mata

A postcard to me is an artifact. It reflects the atmosphere, places and scenery that no one can find except where the postcard was. People would buy and send it to their relatives or friends as gifts and by then a postcard can travel around the world. Similar to the postcard analogy, the pandemic seems to be engaging with the world and people in the same way--a souvenir that travels to every part of the world.

A lot of the visual process begins with my encounter with pamphlets, banners, and signages around the corners around the city of Bandung which later became an inspiration to my choice of colour compositions. Pedestal medium and materials used as publication media cause chemical and natural interactions, resulting in the dissolution of the color of the mold, marking the age of the advertisement.
