The artists further communicate ideas about Indonesian history and identity through a diverse use of material selection and choices. In her series Tubah Dan Perjalan Ipeh’s material practice provides additional layers to her exploration of memory and experience. In these works the audience views glimpses of Ipeh’s time working with Mandarese coastal communities on the Island of Sulawesi, western Indonesia. Her material choice compliments her visual narrative, referencing customs, practices and challenged experiences of the local community, specifically relating to boat-making craftmanship and fisheries.

‘I like to experiment, I am not bound by one medium because every medium that is presented in my work has its own symbol/ meaning. This media also strengthens the narrative of my work. For example, in the work Keluar untuk Ke Dalam (Out for Inward), I used Mandar silk woven fabric with the Sandeq boat motif, which has become a regional icon. However, I let go of some the threads from the motifs, they seem to have faded, which will gradually disappear over time, I want to create a

paradox. I used a traditional sail made of lanu/ gebang leaves used in the Padewakang boat, this type of sail was also used in traditional Javanese boats in the past.’
