To Give is to Receive I and II 2012

Than Sok’s interactive sculptures To Give is to Receive I and  II 2012, combine to form a thought provoking installation that questions the practice of monetary alms-giving in Cambodia; while drawing connections between the roles of monastics and artists. Originally curated as one exhibition titled The Halo of Omnipresent Eye, the series draws on Than’s experiences as both monk and artist, with a unique perspective of the overlapping nuances, patterns and sacrifices of both paths. As suggested in its title, Than reinforces the notion that prior to receiving fortune, one must give first.

The To Give is to Receive series portrays the artist’s own alms scenarios in the gallery. Playfully, the artist asks viewers to perform almsgiving, for which they will, by level of intention and belief, receive merit from supporting the artist.
