Artist Bio
Meicy Sitorus (born 1984), graduated from Industrial Design at Arts and Design Faculty in Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). She has a great interest in photography, and has been involved in several photography workshops as well as photography exhibitions.
The photographic works she produces focus on following up personal matters, often associated with memory, time and history. Photography is not just a medium for work or a documentation tool; it is a way to establish communication with her surroundings. It is also a tool to help her research and perform simple mapping to support the process, which is highly influenced by her background in design.
Meicy is currently working as a freelance photographer as well as graphic designer. In 2013 she founded a duo called ‘Tetangga Pak Gesang’ with Arum Tresnaningtyas Dayuputri. This side project has been actively performing around Indonesia in parallel to her main passion in photography.
Siliwangi (The painter series)
This series of works is an attempt to 'paint' the city, imagining the present and the future of Bandung through a different perspective. During the pandemic, the different perspectives included the government’s implementation of PSBB, a government policy on preventing the transmission of the COVID-19 virus by limiting people's mobility.
The most visible impact of the policy on the city is the loss of its busyness and dynamism. What used to be busy streets and crowded city corners have now become deserted. The usual traffic jams at certain hours in several spots no longer exist. On the bright side, all these limitations have given us the opportunity to view the things differently, that is a pause from the busy life, to take a break and to think and see our surroundings differently.
I paint the quiet and empty city space with words. These words are mantras, prayers, hope, statements, questions and even jokes about our current situation.
