Sarita Ibnoe
Artist Bio
Sarita Ibnoe (born 1989), raised in Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, is a multidisciplinary artist with a traveler’s soul. After completing her BA in Illustration from Middlesex University, London, she began her artistic career as a graphic designer and an illustrator and later found mixed media as well as weaving. Weaving is now her main activity as she creates wearable products as well as artworks.
Her approaches in art are focused on the rebuilding of memories, placing moments of her life under a microscopic lens as well as connecting little pieces of her life together while placing the lives of others in line with hers. As an artist who is constantly trying to connect the dots, Sarita found the joy of being in journeys and being in between places.
A series of layers
This series visualizes the layers that have covered the inner childhood trauma I had - one that I have not recovered from. In various ways, my journey over the years has prepared me for what the world is collectively facing today - the uncertainty, the excess space and time, the distance and the isolation. The pandemic presented more time for reflection and meditation to express and heal. It presented space for me to personally explore my childhood experiences via objects from my younger days.
Repetitive, back and forth constant, meditative. These actions of weaving are done a few times to create layers on top of other layers. Placements of used canvases, yarns and fibres - minding the connectivity and connections made from our pasts to our futures. Thinking of the horizontals against the verticals, building on foundational values to weave my story beyond words and speech - to visualize my personal contemplations through layers and unorthodox methodologies.
